The letter U is the 21st letter of the alphabet, and has a super cool shape - like a really big smile!
However, the letter U is a little bit different from a lot of other letters in that many of the words that begin with U are “un” words.
Confused? Let me explain what I mean by that. Un is what is called a prefix, meaning it comes at the beginning of the word. It is actually added to the root, or main part of the word.
The meaning of “un” is “not”, so many U words are simply the negative form of words like, dress - undress.
U does have other words too, that don’t begin with un, like ugly, and upshot.

Let’s start off our examination of U words with a bang by looking at the unusual U word, unasinous.
This word is an insult and refers to people who are alike in stupidity. Someone who is leading a group of people might be very frustrated by the fact that no one is getting the instructions right. They might say the group is unasinous.
Umbriferous is another word you don’t hear very often. It has to do with being in the shade. You could say that the umbriferous maple trees provided a welcome break from the heat of the summer sun.
Umbriferous can also be applied to a person, and when this is the case it takes on an aspect of evil doings. If someone is making a shady deal, their actions may be described as umbriferous.

Adverbs play an important part in speech. They give additional information to descriptive words, action words, and other adverbs. They tell us things like how, when, where, and why.
Adverbs typically end in “ly”. A good example of a negative U adverb is “unseemly”, and it refers to someone’s actions or behavior.
Inappropriate is a good way to think of “unseemly”. For example, you could say that laughing at a funeral is unseemly behavior.
You might say that hollering and yelling at someone on the street is unseemly.

It is so important to have the right words at hand to be able to describe someone correctly.

Negative Obscure U Words
An obscure word is one we may not be familiar with. Learning some obscure words can be a great way to beef up your vocab.
Have you ever been on the receiving end of harsh criticism? Has someone ‘gone up one side of you and down the other’? If so, you could say that you were upbraided.
It’s definitely not fun to be on the receiving end of an upbraiding, and it is not a good way for a boss or a parent to act.
“Untoward” is another interesting negative, obscure U word. It means unexpected and inappropriate. There is often a sense of discomfort and embarrassment when something untoward is said or done.
