852 Negative Words That Begin With The Letter “E”

negative words

Eerie, Explosive, Egomaniac

Words are power. When we increase our vocabulary we can better express ourselves, and get our point across without any confusion.

Having the right words at our fingertips to elaborate on a point in a paper, or explain a concept in a presentation allows us to do these things with confidence.

In this article I invite you to come with me on a journey to explore the letter E. I am going to talk specifically about words that start with E that have a negative meaning.

I will present these words under particular categories so that you can easily find what you are looking for.

Recently, I have become familiar with a medical term beginning with the letter E as my daughter has discovered that she has endometriosis.

This is a painful disease which one in every ten women worldwide suffers from. Little was known about endometriosis for a long time, but now the medical world is recognizing what a serious issue it is, and research is being done to help the women who suffer from it.

If you suffer from severe abdominal pain, go to a doctor and get it checked out. If endometriosis is the case, the sooner the diagnosis is made, the better.

Negative Adjectives That Begin With E

Adjectives are describing words. They provide information about nouns which are people, places, and things. Our language would lack color if we didn’t have adjectives.

When I consider negative adjectives that start with E, I immediately think of the word, egotistical.

Do you know someone who brags about themselves all the time? Do you get tired of patting them on the back for all the great things they know and have done?

I have known people like that and at first I could put up with their boasting, but after a while it became very tiresome.

People who are so absorbed with themselves may come off as being annoyingly confident, but their need to keep blowing their own horn actually comes from a lack of self-esteem.

Understanding this can be helpful in responding to people like that. If you have a friend who is egotistical, let them know that you truly see them as talented and skilled, and that their boasting is annoying, and unnecessary.

Hopefully they will relax and stop bragging so much, and you can enjoy your time together.

Sad And Depressing Words That Start With E

Sad and depressing feelings often stem from the absence of something. The word eviscerate reflects this.

The literal meaning of eviscerate is to remove vital, internal organs of an animal or a person. A taxidermist or a surgeon would do this kind of work.

Let’s not dwell on that somewhat gross notion, and look instead at the figurative meaning of eviscerate.

We can apply the word evisceration to people. In this sense it can mean to have the essential part of a person taken away.

It can also mean to insult someone or disturb them to such a high degree that it’s as if their guts were being torn out.

Think of extreme criticism or judgment. Have you experienced this yourself or perhaps you have a friend who has? It can take a long time to recover from the pain that can cause.

Remind yourself of all your good qualities, and what you are trying to achieve, then pick up the pieces and keep going! Check out the many self-help ideas at https://thefifthelementlife.com/ like crystals and music.

Obscure Words That Begin With The Letter E

Obscure words are those that we don’t hear very often or whose meaning isn’t clear. These words can often add a lot to our speech, and are worth taking a look at.

There are so many excellent obscure words that start with E, it’s hard to know where to start, but I do want to highlight two.

First of all, let’s look at the word efface. This word literally means to erase. You can use it to refer to removing words you have written, or the crayon from the walls your children drew all over, lol.

Erase can also be used to reflect feeling like you have disappeared and are not noticeable to others. There have been times in my life when I have wanted to blend in with the woodwork.

I felt that way after my boyfriend of four years suddenly broke up with me. I was devastated and felt worthless. I felt like he had effaced me from his life, and I was terribly hurt.

You could say that he treated me egregiously. This is another negative, obscure E word. It means super bad and shocking. If you have ever been treated egregiously, you get what I’m saying.

It’s hard to bounce back from something like that, but after you’ve given yourself some time to wallow in those hurt feelings, get up and get back in the game.

Negative Words That Start With E To Describe A Person Or Thing

Looking for the right word to tell your friend just how annoying your boss is? Needing the right term for a presentation you are making to the town council about how they shouldn’t get rid of the park?

Whatever the purpose, knowing the right word to describe a person or thing can help to be convincing and drive your point home.

Let’s take a look at the word, erratic. This negative E word describes a person or thing that is irregular, not steady.

If we were talking about a person, we might say they are moody and unpredictable. I used to work with someone who was erratic.

From day to day, I never knew whether I was going to be dealing with the happy, positive version of my colleague, or the irritable, angry one. Tricky for sure.

There are also lots of ways that we can apply the word erratic to things. For example, we could say that the weather in April can be erratic, meaning it is sometimes pleasant and warm, and other times it is cold and wet.

You could also say that a person’s appetite is erratic. At times they want to eat everything in sight, and at other times, they eat like a bird.

Read on for more words to describe both people and things.

Funny Words That Start With E

Some words sound funny, and other words have a funny meaning, but it’s always amusing to look at funny words. The letter E offers us some interesting choices.

I hate mice. I also live in the country which means these rodents like to be my flatmates. When I see a mouse, I inevitably let out an ear-piercing scream. The usual word used for this is “eek!”

Another word that I would categorize as a funny E word is effluvium. This word means an unpleasant odor or discharge. Need I say more?

Here’s a third funny E word. Have you ever had an eyegasm? This word means to feel great pleasure from something you see. Who knew?!

Unusual Words That Start With The Letter E

Becoming familiar with unusual words is a great way of building vocabulary. Below you will find a list of unusual E words. Let’s take a closer look at one that I find particularly interesting, epanorthosis.

If you are talking and you stop and correct something you said, replacing it with other words, you just used the figure of speech called epanorthosis.

Usually, the word or phrase you use to replace what you just said is a stronger term. For example, you might say, “I was mad - no, I was furious!”

Another example could be, “We jogged - no, we ran to the safety of the cabin!”

Impress your friends by using this term!

Halloween Words That Start With E

There are so many great E words for Halloween! Think of evil and eerie!

I once had a Halloween party for my children and their friends. I had great fun creating food that was gross and yucky.

One of the dishes was eyeballs - actually peeled grapes. Another dish contained the entrails of animals - actually spaghetti.

The kids had a great time and the ‘dishes’ were a big hit.

A classic film about evil is The Exorcist. If you’re a fan of scary movies and haven’t seen this one, it’s a must! A young girl becomes possessed by the devil. Creepy stuff!

Exasperatedly is a great example of a negative E adverb. It says that you are at the end of your rope. When my husband and I were first married we bought an old car that was really a piece of junk.

We were constantly having to fix it, and it left us at the side of the road more than once. We were so fed up with that vehicle! We exasperatedly continued to replace parts and pay for service until we could eventually afford to buy another car.
