1060 Negative Words Beginning With The Letter “I”

Last Updated on May 23, 2023

Idiocy, Ingrate, Irrational

Negative words that start with letter I provide rich choices for increasing your vocabulary.

Choose from adjectives, adverbs, obscure and unusual words. There are words that describe people and things, even words that we associate with Halloween, as well as humorous negative I words.

If you’ve ever been stumped for the right word to explain an idea or a concept, or you search for ages to get the word you want when you’re writing a paper, exploring negative I words can help.

Sometimes it can be hard to find the right words to describe a person. You and your friend are chatting at your favorite cafe, and you start talking about the new person at work.

You really want to capture what the person is like. You explain how you have been so welcoming, bringing them coffee one morning, inviting them to have lunch with you in the cafeteria, and taking the time to explain how things run at the office.

However, all of your efforts have been met without thanks. You can’t believe how ungrateful they have been. The perfect word to describe this person is “ingrate”.

Let’s continue to look at more negative I words!

Negative I words To Describe People And Things

Some words do double duty, and can be used to describe both people and things. The word, impractical, is a good example of this.

First let’s look at how impractical can be used to describe a thing.

I love watching the home renovation shows where the contractors and interior designers swoop in and make a space that was not working for the owners into a space that is totally functional.

When a space doesn’t function for you, it might be too small, or the layout of the kitchen might not work well, then that space is impractical.

To use impractical to describe a person, think of someone who does not have the skills to do practical things. These tend to be people who are not good with their hands.

Negative Adjectives That Start With I

Adjectives describe nouns – people, places, and things. They provide us with information that helps us to really get the picture of what is being described.

A great negative I adjective is the word, impetuous. When I was a child, I was not very tidy, and would pile up my clothes from day to day until there was a huge stack.

My mother would reach the point where she would insist that I clean my room and put all the clothes away.

I would go in there like the Tasmanian Devil in the Bugs Bunny cartoon, and stuff things into drawers, shove things under the bed and into my closet, and push on the door until it shut.

The right word to describe how I cleaned my room would be impetuous. I did it as quickly as I could and with little thought or care for how my things should be put away.

You’ll be glad to know that I am not so impetuous now, and my room is tidy and clean, well, most of the time.

Obscure Words That Start With I

Obscure words can be fun. These are words we may not be very familiar with, or we don’t know the meaning of.

Consider the word, iconography. This is the study of images and symbols used in art. It can also refer to the actual images and symbols themselves.

Archeologists have long studied the iconography of drawings found on the walls of caves in numerous places around the world. This has led to an understanding of what was important to these various peoples.

In Barcelona, Spain, there is a Picasso museum. Here you can see the influential work of this famous painter and sculptor.

His work defined the Cubist movement in modern art. This is evident in the iconography of his work.

Negative Adverbs That Begin With I

An important part of speech is the adverb. It is commonly formed with an “ly” at the end, like the word “commonly” that I just used.

Adverbs are important because they give us additional information about adjectives, verbs, and other adverbs.

An important negative I adverb is the word, illegibly. If something is illegible it cannot be read or made out.

If you’re driving down the road and you come across a sign that is old and worn, with very faint writing on it, you might not be able to make out what it says. You would say the sign is illegible.

Doctors have a reputation for writing illegibly, and even some pharmacists have trouble figuring out prescriptions.

Not so long ago, children in school were taught handwriting. Some students were unable to form the letters very well, and their handwriting was quite illegible.

Now, students do much of their work on a computer, and their work is easy to read. No more illegibly written work for teachers to try to decipher!

I Words For Halloween

What’s not to love about Halloween? Kids love to put on a costume, and go door to door to collect candy. It’s so much fun!

One of my children always wanted to be something scary for Halloween. They were often an imp of some sort, a small devil or goblin.

The word, imp, can also mean an elf or sprite. They are always up to no good, and have a mischievous nature.

Another Halloween I word is intestines. If you’re hosting a Halloween party for your kids and their friends, it’s fun to make foods that look and feel like creepy things.

One of the dishes that’s always a hit is a bowl of intestines. It’s simply spaghetti with a bit of ketchup for blood.

Blindfold the kids and they’ll have fun feeling each of the dishes, and trying to identify what creepy thing it is. Peeled grapes work great as eyeballs!

Unusual Words That Start With I

Becoming familiar with some unusual words is a great way to increase your vocabulary. For the letter I we have lots of great words that you will want to learn.

Impasse and ingratiate are two. Let’s start with the word, impasse.

An impasse is a situation where you’re not moving forward because of a disagreement or some kind of roadblock.

The word, impasse, is often heard in association with negotiations between two parties. It could be a government body and a union lobbying for better working conditions.

You can also use this word in relation to something that is blocking you from moving forward. A fallen tree is blocking the road, and you cannot go any farther. You have come to an impasse.

Another negative I word that is on our unusual list is, ingratiate. Do you know someone at work who tries to ‘get in good’ with the boss?

They are always looking for things they can do so they will look good in the boss’s eyes, and they are always paying them compliments. Your new car is so cool! That suit looks great on you!

When a person acts this way, they are trying to ingratiate themselves with their boss. It could also apply to someone trying to win the favor of a particular neighbor who is very wealthy and influential.

Funny Words That Start With I

The letter I gives us some terrific options for funny words. Let’s look at a couple.

First off is the word, itty-bitty. This is a funny sounding word that means very small, and can be used to describe anything that is particularly tiny.

Another funny I word is ignoramus. You might guess that this word is someone who is ignorant of something or is stupid. It is also often used to suggest rudeness.

For example, if someone burped loudly in public you could say they were an ignoramus. They would be acting as if they didn’t know that they should not do that.

More I Words

Looking for more great negative I words? Check out the list below!

Some of my favorites are impertinent, insouciance, and inane. These words can add variety and power to your language, and can be used in everyday speech.

Impertinent is the word you want when you want to describe someone who is rude and disrespectful. The customer was impertinent with the sales clerk over not being able to get the color of fabric they wanted for their chair.

Insouciance is a great word that refers to an attitude of indifference, or a casual lack of concern.

The passenger responded with insouciance to the change in the train schedule that would mean arriving at their destination an hour later. They would be able to finish the interesting book they were reading.

The third word is “inane”.” This word simply means silly or stupid. The government has an incredible number of inane forms that must be filled out.

Go ahead and impress your friends by using these words and others from the list below!
